Sinus infections occur as a result of a cold or allergy problems. The sinus cavities become inflamed and filled with mucus. Since the mucus is not draining as it was designed for, which causes an infection. This infection is what causes the headache.
Sinus Types
There are four major sinuses:
- Maxillary sinus - It tends to cause pain in the cheeks and makes patients think that they can have a toothache
- Frontal sinus - It causes headaches over the eyes.ethmoid and sphenoid.
- Ethmoid sinus causes headaches between the eyes.
- Sphenoid sinus causes headaches behind the eyes.
All of the four sinus cavities can cause pain and tenderness in the face.
Treatment
Most sinus infections will not go away from them. If you do not get rid of the sinus infection that will not get rid of the headache. You can take a product like Advil Cold and sinus, but this will only mask the pain of migraine for a short period. Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic regimen. If it does not work then it will be referred to an ear, nose and throat doctor. This doctor will determine if surgery is necessary or not. A CT scan or MRI will be ordered to help make the decision. Patients can do some therapy at home. Home therapies include the use of nasal sprays to loosen mucus, sitting in a bath full of steam, or the establishment of a humidifier at night.
